SoRock is Not Just in Your Schools
Understanding SoRock in Your Community
Why Towns Fund Prevention - Not Schools
SoRock’s prevention work is a municipal public health function, not a school program. While some activities occur in schools, the work serves entire communities, children, families, and residents of all ages, and addresses issues that affect public safety, health care costs, law enforcement, and overall community well-being.
Because our schools are regional, school budgets cannot equitably or appropriately fund services intended to benefit multiple towns. Municipal funding ensures fair cost-sharing, local oversight, and consistent prevention efforts across the community, before problems reach schools, emergency services, or taxpayers at a much higher cost.
Understanding Coalition Data and Community Impact
Most number-based data in prevention work comes from direct services, where people are counted when they take part in a program or activity. As a community coalition, much of SoRock’s work is indirect. We focus on improving systems, policies, school and community environments, and partnerships that support youth and families. These efforts reach many people, but they are harder to count. For this reason, the numbers we report reflect a minimum number of people served, knowing that our actual reach is broader.
Youth risk behavior data was collected at Timberlane this spring for the first time in 12 years. The survey is anonymous and reported as combined data for the entire district, not by individual towns. Because there was such a long gap in participation, it will take several years of regular data collection before we can show trends over time. This data still provides an important starting point to guide prevention efforts and measure progress in the future. Again, these results will NOT be town specific and will reflect several environmental factors in addition community wide and school based prevention efforts.
