FAQ

Why Do Towns Fund Prevention?

SoRock’s prevention work is a municipal public health function, not a school program. While some activities occur in schools, the work serves entire communities, children, families, and residents of all ages, and addresses issues that affect public safety, health care costs, law enforcement, and overall community well-being.  â€‹Because our schools are regional, school budgets cannot equitably or appropriately fund services intended to benefit multiple towns. Municipal funding ensures fair cost-sharing, local oversight, and consistent prevention efforts across the community, before problems reach schools, emergency services, or taxpayers at a much higher cost.  On occasion a school district may choose to provide a stipend to the coalition for additional support, however we do not petition schools for funding.

Understanding Coalition Data and Community Impact

Most number-based data in prevention work comes from direct services, where people are counted when they take part in a program or activity. As a community coalition serving a large geographically diverse catchment area, much of SoRock’s work is indirect. We focus on improving systems, policies, school and community environments, and partnerships that support youth and families. These efforts reach many people, but they are harder to count. For this reason, the numbers we report reflect a minimum number of people served, knowing that our actual reach is broader.
